WOW!!! That photo of Rob getting some air definitely belongs in the "how high can you go?" thread! IMO, hands down winner!

Have to agree!! It's not often you see a shot that gives you a feel for the height and gives you a view of the kite as well...awesome stuff guys!! Send the dude a prize!

Re: Sterkies Speed Event - Spring 2008

Thanks for the shot Basil - it is great to see a shot, like Rickster says, when you can see the kite and the land it gives you more of a perspective of the size of the jump. When you are up there you think you are high but when you see a shot like this from below it looks even bigger.

Thanks to all the boys up there for a great day - I FINALLY managed to get the wind that has been promised and sample Sterkies in all it's glory. Still damn cold but definately worth the drive. It gusted up to 48.6 knots that day and it was a lot of fun. Pity about the direction as I was keen to try the new Airtool Speed board out but at least I got to see how high the Nova 3 can jump. It definately has got a lot of lift and was super stable in some very strong gusts - I think it was around 35 knots at the time of the photo and that was a 9 by the way! Well done to Luke as well for going balls  to the wall and also boosting HUGE.

Hope to do it again soon.

    Cheers Rob

Sheesh, that's a big jump there. Nice dude. I need to get down there. What's the forcast for this weekend? Does Sterkies work only in front of and behind the fronts?

Re: Sterkies Speed Event - Spring 2008

I've given a brief write up about Sterkies to Carlo, that will give you some stats and background information on Sterkies.
Sterkies is uniquely situated at the edge of the escarpment and therefore does not rely solely on fronts for wind.
From May through to October it blows regularly due to temperature/pressure variances between the top and bottom of the plateau.

I've postponed the event this weekend and extended the carry over until 27-28 September.
The front will arrive inland a couple of days too late, and I don't want to hold the event in marginal conditions.

On a more positive note, I received 10x GT-31's (handheld GPS's) yesterday and I'm busy configuring and charging them at present.

Their outside appearance looks the same as the GT-11, but it's got a newer chipset which consumes less power, it has a more sensitive receiver (it now gets a lock on satellites in my office), and it's more accurate. Locosys have done improvements under the hood where it counts.

I've written a manual specifically for the speed sailor, so you'll know how configure the device properly and get the most out of it.
Here the manual (this applies to both the GT-11 and GT-31) : http://www.freight-focus.com/download/gt31_manual.pdf]http://www.freight-focus.com/download/gt31_manual.pdf

Re: Sterkies Speed Event - Spring 2008

The event is taking place FRIDAY to SUNDAY (19-21 Sept) !!!

There is decent wind forecast, so I'm confident we'll get plenty of heats in and see some serious speeds.
30+ sailors will be taking part and it promises to be one to remember.
I've booked plenty of accomodation, so make a plan and get there; I
also can help with lifts to and from the airport.

Entrants are from Gauteng and KZN at present, but I've had no replies from the Western Cape, come on guys, I thought the Cape is the speed capital of SA.

Re: Sterkies Speed Event - Spring 2008

Change of plans, the forecast has changed enough to warrant us changing the event to Tuesday & Wednesday next week (23-24 Sept) instead.
Saturday's wind has gone and Tuesday and Wednesday's wind looks excellent !
Not enough guys could make Friday and with Wednesday being a public holiday, it made the decision clearer.
21 knots is forcast for both days at present, this should equate to 30+ actual at Sterkies.

I've booked 3 chalets, but I've asked for more just in case. I've also booked the hall so we can have a social there on Tuesday evening and review the day's results and pictures.

No more changes will be made to the dates here on in, it's going ahead for sure.
