Fun Inland Speed Event at Sterkies

I'm looking for your comments and suggestions on this.

Even though Sterkfontein Dam is a long way for most you, you are most welcome to join us around May 2008. No firm dates have been set yet, but May should have the best chance of wind before it gets really cold inland.

This is in your off season, and Sterkies nukes around this time of year. We recorded over 40 knots there is part May.

The top speed there is 44.7 knots at present, so we know it has the potential, even if it's over a short distance.

Prizes could be awarded for the best 2 and 10 second times, and maybe 150 meters as that is the optimum distance to keep it safe. Speed board and twintip divisions could also be considered.

New GPS devices will be made available, which can be hired or bought at the event.
We will use the Locosys GT-11 units, as they are the most accurate devices available at present (they support doppler readings), and will be the only recognised devices to compete with from January 2008 (besides Trimble).

Top notch speed boards will be made available for those interested. These can be hired or bought at the event.
This is not a money making racket, but rather an opportunity for those interested to try their hand at speed kiting.
This way you can see how fast you are and compare your speeds with friends.
You will also be able to post your speeds on the GPS Kitesurfing site (http://50knots.xs4all.nl/gps-kitesurfing/gps.asp) to see how you fare internationally.

Thanks to GPS, this is now possible and it will definitely be a first inland, so come and let's make history together.

Basil, can you provide details such where, when, accomodation for those of us who have not been to sterkires before.

I am guessing sat and and sun, probably all day on an informal run by run format.

    Hi Rob

"Sterkies" is the affectionate name Sterkfontein Dam near Harrismith in the Free State Province has been given by sailors many year ago.

There are 17 chalets at the dam and there is still plenty of accomodation available as there have been several last minute cancellations. You can book at chalet on 0586223892 or 0713002559.

If they say nothing is available or you're on your own, then contact me on 0828536384 and I'll organise a place for you to stay as I know of several chalets that still have places available.

There are many Vaalies going there this weekend, so you can probably get a lift there if you fly to Joburg and notify me soonest.

It's a fun speed event that will be held this Saturday and Sunday.

We'll have a circuit (approx. 400 meters) denoted by 2 chop breakers upwind and a downwind buoy.

We'll split competitors into 2 groups so that the water does not get too crowded, as the bay is small (300 meters), and we'll have short heats initially (30-40 minutes).

I expect that we'll do away with heats after a few hours when some competitors take a break.

Each rider will have a GT-11 GPS and there are 2 division, namely twintip and speedboard. You may enter one division or both. Ranking will be based on the highest average speed over 200 meters.

If we get wind on both days (as is expected), points will be awarded per day to derive an overall ranking.

The directions, race notice and entry form can be found at www.ellada.co.za

A detailed thread about the event can be found at http://xsport.co.za/forums/index.php?topic=1563.msg12156;topicseen#new

Re: Fun Inland Speed Event at Sterkies

    EVENT REPORT BACK :

On Saturday we light and very gusty wind, so no racing took place.

But today we had much stronger wind (18.2 ave. and 35 max.), but the decent wind bearly lasted for an hour (10h30-11h30) which resulted in the second heat being contested in much lighter wind than the first. So we made the heat longer in the hope that the wind would freshen, which it did for a short while, but it never reached the same strength as we had in the first heat.

Despite this I'd consider the event a success, as it introduced 19 kiters to speed and they started to appreciate the rush that it gives one.
We also had wonderful support from the Durban boys, namely Reese Hendrikz and Sean Paterson from Surfers Balito (Flysurfer), Bruce and Rob Chrystal and Sipho from Ocean2Air, Gary from Airtool, and Clyde who was the only windsurfer but gave it a bash on a speed needle.

Special thanks to Gunter from Joluka (Airush) and Reese from Surfers Balito (Flysurfer) for their generous contribution of prizes

Thanks to Rob Munro (Naish Africa) for greatly reducing priceof the GPS units which were crucial for this event, and to Angus Welch (Cape Doctor) for making a batch of excellent speed boards for the event which clocked a peak of 42.68 knots and a 10 second average just over 40 knots.

There was wonderful spirit amoungst the competitors and I'm sure this event will now go from strength to strength.

The top 3 places in each division were :
    Twintip
1st - Anton Nel  35.06 knots (OVERALL WINNER of floating trophy for best speed)
    2nd - Bruce Chrystal
    3rd - Gerhard Swart

    Speedboard
    1st - Gert Fouche  31.56 knots
    2nd - Danie Joubert
    3rd - Clyde Wynter

A big thank you to the entrants and sponsors for making this a memorable first event and I've give a full report tomorrow.

    Howzit Basil

A big thanks to you for all your work and energy in getting this event up and running. Really good to see someone outside the industry getting involved. Nice one China ...

You also forgot to mention your speed of 41 knots - we will be chasing you next time ...

I have to say that I was not that amped on the speed thing but after competing this weekend I had a great time and want to do it again. One thing I did learn is that you have to have a speed board - no argument and you also have to have a GPS unit. Garry from Airtool is already working on some boards for us and we will be getting the GPS in the shop (give me a call Rob!) - getting the board and the unit weill not be a big outlay.

I think that all involved learned a hell of a lot and next time we will al be better prepared.

A good turn out and a nice vibe up there ... once again well done Basil ...
