    Re: Wednesday Night Racing

I would recommend that nothing be changed. The start and course is very challenging because of the ship and it makes so much more entertaining. Although I would prefer the Doodles bouy in the water - I nearly ran aground rounding it this week.

Rumour has it all sorts of boards will be arriving next week.....dun-dun-dun-dun

    Hi Peter

    sorry fin !

We did not use a jet ski to take out the buoys but had to swim them out or use a SUP board. so next week Olaf vt will have a jet ski to do that.

    Re: Wednesday Night Racing

Am researching the whistles as we speak and trying to get 100 for the next race.
Also have a strarting horn that the jet ski can have close to the ship and sound.
I will donate the use of my radio helmet so that as Olaf VT raises the flag he can radio the jet ski to blow the horn at the same time for the guys further out who ride without glasses( not mentioning names).
I think this will be good as the jetski rider will  see any kites that are upwind of the line directly to Olaf at the sart and thus be an accurate marker for the riders to guage.

The radio helmet will also allow olaf to send the jet ski where it is need in an incident and any rider wanting to report someone in trouble then jsut needs to get to the Beach officials as fast as possible.

    Re: Wednesday Night Racing

I had a think about this and as much as the race is really good and do see the dangers and problems with the current start line, thats why i think they should change the start line from (blue line) to a better start line with a different angle. here are some reasons for the change

    1. with this on a SE you can start on more of a reach and not a beat thus everyone should be able to clear the seli1 on the first tack (reverse can be used of the stern of the boat in NW)

    2. start is longer, so it should be safer

Also maybe ask SAMSA (who now are the owners of the seli1, according to the sign on the side) if someone could paint a orange line on the side, and with bigger flags on the beach everyone should see the start line.

Also the idea of having 2 starts for directionals and then twintips i think is good, 5 min apart should be enough.

    Re: Wednesday Night Racing

    Hi guys,

I think that apart from Peter doing so well, we shouldn't change anything!

The course is as it is. People have been perfecting their skills on how to start and ride the course. I’m especially referring to those that have taken part since the beginning. I have even seen guys practicing the course during the week….. It would be unfair to them to suddenly change the course. As far as the start goes, it is NOT cramped. Go and have a look at the internationally recognized races and you'll see that it isn't much different from ours. The only thing one may argue is to allow the less advance kiters to start 5 minutes later. This gives them a change to get used to the course and racing conditions without having to deal with the starting frenzy.

In reality, the chances of advanced kiters getting tangled are slim unless they are reckless, in which case actions will be taken against them, i.e. disqualified or even kicked out of the league. This brings me to another point. “How many kiters know when to give way???” Everyone taking part should at least know this. It is mentioned at the skippers meetings but half the people don’t pitch for these and the other half don’t understand them. Terms such as PORT and STARBOARD tacks. A kiter coming into the beach has right of way and should be able to keep his line. The kiter going out has to bear off down wind doesn’t matter who’s furthest upwind. The only time this is not relevant is when a kiter is forced to turn around at the beach in which case the second or trailing kiter should turn around as well or fully bear off down wind if he wants to reach the beach. These are the things that causes confusion in races. People not knowing the rules.

Other than that I think safety can always be improved but don't just mention it, be innovative like Brad and take action if you feel strongly about it.

The league is just in its embryo stage and I think the judges and organizers having been doing a great job so far.

I for one, am really enjoying the racing and look forward to every Wednesday!!

    Now, how to beat Peter.....mmmmmm

    Re: Wednesday Night Racing

just want to make a note that the the SE actually blows a bit cross-onshore so that start line i suggested is actually MORE correct than the old one. Also dont think ill affect anyone badly in racing, should actually make it better for the pros
