    Re: Bandit and Torch Reviews

    hey Rory...

I sold both my Torches (10 and 8m, 2007 thou) for a 9m F.One Bandit, and am loving it.

The kite's range is phenomenal... kiteloops really quickly, the unhooked riding is nice and powerful, yet in control somehow. Bar pressure not the lightest, but not bad at all. The depower is huge when need be!

I ride the 9m in 15-25knts comfortably... the range covers up to low 30's, but i'd suggest scaling down to the 7.5m if you want to continue pushing, otherwise it's just hang on, boost and survive! haa haa.

    Otherwise it's an awesome kite.
Mate of mine (Beestie), rides the 08 Torches, 8 and 10m... i'll get him to comment here as well, to give you a bit of a review.

Hope this has helped in someway...

    Re: Bandit and Torch Reviews

Flew the bandit on the weekend, it has a bit of bar pressure but not like a bow, feels a lot like a SLE when you pull on the bar, nice kite. The torch is a C with no bridles and a 5th line. The bar pressure is light and it turns on a dime with the sickest loops ever. The only problem is that you won't be flying one kite you need to rig the right size for the wind speed. They have awesome depower for a C and I'm a light guy and have never been dragged out to sea on a torch you can stop if over powered. Relaunching is easy, just pull on the 5th line, the kite will lift a wingtip and let go of the 5th line, the kite will launch. The torch is a awesome tool for freestyle, very direct response from the bar and just does what you want it to do with no on-off feel like SLE kites when you unhook them.

The only problem with the torch is that when you depower the kite on the strap more than halfway it becomes very slow(turning) but you need to rig the right size then. I only use the strap when launching and landing in strong winds otherwise I scoot like a rabid dog. hahaha.

It all depends on what you want to do and spend. I prefere not using depower cause of the performance loss but at the same time is spending a small fortune. The only way that you can be 100% sure is to go out and demo the kites and feel them for yourself and decide witch one you like the most...

    Re: Bandit and Torch Reviews

Here is a quick review of the Naish Torch 08 10m.

Rob Munro was kind enough to loan me one for a few months.

Bottom line is that this is an awesome kite that excells in most arenas but not all.

Build quality is superb. This kite will last forever. I really think that Naish have the edge over all the other brands when it comes to build.

The octopus system is effortless. Definitely on the water quicker than anyonelse. I did get a strut leak which slowly drained the leading edge and left me swimming in from a long way out!! Would be nice to be able to seal the struts off from the main bladder, not just a non return valve.

The bar is very well made and good looking. The below bar sheeting system works better than any other below bar sheeting system I have tried. The hassle with this system is that the bar throw also shortens when you depower the kite. But this never seemed to be an issue as the sweet spot moves closer so no need for the long throw.

The kite prefers flying with some tension on the 5th line and more tension of the steering lines. Its a bit of a dog on factory settings but comes alive when you tighten 5th and steering lines. The steering is fast ( not the fastest but still damn quick) and feel on the bar is lively. The steering pressure is just right. Enough pressure so you know where the kite is but not enough to cause overuse injuries (ie kiters elbow!)

The kite is a freestylers dream. It unhooks beautifully and the kite loops are quick but meaty. It also loves the old school style, big jumps with spins, board offs etc. If you like to throw down tricks then this is your kite, no other. But you must be compfortable handling a C. This kite pulls hard. Its range is huge but it needs a strong back leg to stomp that rail. Pooh style riders need not apply!

It let me down in the waves. Its just seemed out of sync with the wave. I am not sure if that is my style or the kite. I am a C rider full stop and ride hooked in and unhooked in the surf on a wave board. The kite lagged thru the turns when the kite became unloaded such as on the bottom turns which resulted in aborted bottom turns and missing sections. I ended up buying another kite because of this as I am moving away from freestyle to wave riding as I get older and greyer!

Bottom line. This is a C kite with a big range for a someone who knows how to edge. Its made for guys who like to mix it up, not lawn mowers. If waves are your thing you may find a better suited kite else where.

    Great kite.

    Re: Bandit and Torch Reviews

That slowdown in the kite when line tension drops is a dream when doing tricks, it gives you lots of time to hook back in or get your balance. When riding in the ocean you must be aware of this cause when you turn around fast before a wave the kite takes a while to catch wind again and you loose speed. I had a wave break on my head because of this, you have to lift it up more to keep line tension. But yes they are wonderful in every other way.

Great review Rob, couldn't fault it - good to see you mentioned the good with the bad, gives it so much more substance.

    Re: Bandit and Torch Reviews

The biggest problem here is that Rob is wanting a demo on the 2008 Fuel but we are sold out and whats the point when there are 2009's coming out in a few months . Seen the 2009 sample version and ...... well ........... say  no more !!

    Re: Bandit and Torch Reviews

Just check the skies in CPT and LBN, Torches are by far the most popoular and best selling C kites going.

If you want to try one out, get in torch, but I think there a very limited amount of 12, 8 & 6m kites left.

    Cheers and enjoy!
