Sterkies Speed Event - Spring 2008

It's almost time for the next Sterkies Speed Event !!!
Gauteng and KZN will be there in full force.
I'd love to have some Cape speedsters join in, we'll help you out with transfers from O.R. Tambo and accomodation if needed.

The wind has been less frequent this Winter, but never fails to blow in September.
Try to keep the first 3 weekends free, namely 6-7, 13-14, and 20-21 September, as the wind inland can be very fickle, and we'll have the event on the first weekend that decent wind is forecast.
It's already warming up nicely, and we should have warm air temperatures at the event, but the water will still be cold.

Those of you that have not entered yet that intend competing, please send your entries in soonest as this helps with the planning, and entries are limited to 30 riders, and half the places are already taken.

I've booked whatever chalets were available on each of these weekends; the number of chalets available vary depending on which weekend the event is held.
Chalets will be offered on a first come first served basis, and will only be reserved for entrants.
Be careful not to double book; speak to your friends first to ensure they have not already booked a chalet.

I'll give you advance notice of which weekend we intend holding the event.
The first notice will be 6 days ahead, any earlier and it's guess work.
The second notice will be on the Wednesday ahead of the proposed weekend. We will not back out after this, as it's close enough for us to be certain the wind will blow.

Thanks for your support at the last event, and we're putting in the effort to make the Spring event even better.
Any ideas or suggestions to help improve the event are most welcome.

Re: Sterkies Speed Event - Spring 2008

I've had an overwhelming response since yesterday and we'll reach the maximum 30 entries tomorrow, meaning we're fully subscribed in a single day; I'm awaiting some competitor names from KZN then I'll add them (at least 6 more still need to be added).
I've added the names of competitors from the first event who've verbally confirmed their attendance, but can you please check the current entrant list for September and tell me if I've either omitted your name or have listed and you don't intend entering.

    Here's the September entrant list : http://www.freight-focus.com/download/entry_list_spring2008.pdf

I know it's a trek for the guys from the Cape, but it would be awesome if you could join in, I'll try to help assist where possible, mail or call me (my contact details are on the entry form).

Nice one Basil. Sorry, can't make it this year, but would love to come up next time.

Please do send some pictures and post on the forums for all to see. I'm sure you guys are going to have a blast!

Re: Sterkies Speed Event - Spring 2008

Thanks Carlo, we sure could use some entrants from the Cape to round off the event. Only Olaf and Rob are possibles thus far.
There is R3000 for first place and R1000 for second place, and several kiteboarding products up to 3rd place in each discipline, plus food and drink.

The wind kicked in nicely inland today (35 kt gusts), and there's plenty more forecast over the next week.
We have a good spread of entrants between Gauteng and KZN at present.

I just returned from Bloemfontein today after a meeting at their provincial offices, and the Free State Province Environmental affairs and Tourism loved the idea and are willing to give the event their  support, this will translate into exposure, funding and involvement of other departments such as water affairs and the sports trust.

Re: Sterkies Speed Event - Spring 2008

Sterkies went Psycho today at 50+ knots, the windy season's arrived.
It was unfortunately NW which means it's too side shore, and at this strength it had swell that looked like the sea.

The forecast for next weekend (6-7 Sept) does not look ideal for speed, so the event will be postponed to the weekend of 13-14 Sept unless the forecast changes dramatically.

Re: Sterkies Speed Event - Spring 2008

Hey Basil - Great 2 days of nuking wind - still cannot believe just how hard it does blow up there  - last night was great with the Westerly and this morning - that wind certainly blew. The wind blew gale force 40 - 50 knots all the way to just the otherside of Midmar then it dropped off !  We went through some big fires as well on the way to Bergville.

Can you get ant to post the pics up from the last 2 days - the pics from yesterday looked good ...

We manged to find that pootjie - seems some of the cleaning staff had relocatated it !!

Lets hope for some strong wind on the 13th 14th ...
