Why does my kite stall when i unhook?

Why does my kite stall (the back pulls down too much) and kite almost reverses out of the sky when i unhook?

You need to de-power more before unhook. When you start out riding unhook, depower just before unhook.Eventually you will find a depowered setting that suits you and you would not need to depower constantly while freestyling.

Test the water before you jump in....pull your bar in to the maximunm and watch the kites reaction, if it flares then depower some more before testing again. When you hit the sweet spot, unhook and hold on!

Trim your kite correctly so that when you ride hooked or unhooked, the kite doesn't over-sheet.. You shouldn't be depowering every time you want to unhook.

Just play with the back lines, trimming them out a bit, so it doesn't oversheet.
Launch your kite, unhook, and look at the shape of your kite.

If it's over-sheeting, (OPENING TOO MUCH), then it'll stall.

    If not, PERFECT.

Re: Why does my kite stall when i unhook?

most kites are set up so that when you're hooked in and sheet the bar in all the way the kite will be powered up without stalling the kite.

your kite will stall when there's too much tension on the back (steering lines) - in other words it will oversheet.

what you need to do is compensate for unhooking (and oversheeting) by depowering your kite more - ie. put your kite on the least powered knot before going out, then before you unhook, depower your kite all the way. try this then work your way up to a more optimal setting where if you unhook your kite doesnt oversheet, yet when you are hooked in you still have enough power.

it's also worth noting that some kites just generally unhook better than others - the older bows don't really unhook all that well - but newer ones do, as do most of the newer kites - c's etc.
